چکیده

A new species of mesophotic marine red algae, Ethelia hawaiiensis sp. nov., is illustrated and described. distinguished from other members the genus by its large diameter assurgent filament cells, in having thallus cavities that are frequently inhabited microalgae, as well DNA sequence. Analyses mitochondrial COI, plastid rbcL, nuclear SSU sequences demonstrated E. was distinct it not phylogenetically closely related to known species. Both COI rbcL analyses placed within a clade sequences, while analyses, which only included two previously described Ethelia, resolved sister comprising plus Peyssonneliales. Morphological differences between discussed.

Mass coral bleaching due to unprecedented marine heatwave in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands)

2014 marked the sixth and most widespread mass bleaching event reported in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, home to the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM), the world's second largest marine reserve. This event was associated with an unusual basin-scale warming in the North Pacific Ocean, with an unprecedented peak intensity of around 20°C-weeks of cumulative heat stress at Lisi...

Tosanoides obama, a new basslet (Perciformes, Percoidei, Serranidae) from deep coral reefs in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

The new species Tosanoides obama is described from two specimens collected at a depth of 90-92 m off Kure Atoll and Pearl and Hermes Atoll, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It differs from the other two species of this genus in life color and in certain morphological characters, such as number of pored lateral-line scales, pectoral-fin rays, snout length, anterior three dorsal-fin spine lengths, ...

New Marine Antifouling Compounds from the Red Alga Laurencia sp.

Six new compounds, omaezol, intricatriol, hachijojimallenes A and B, debromoaplysinal, and 11,12-dihydro-3-hydroxyretinol have been isolated from four collections of Laurencia sp. These structures were determined by MS and NMR analyses. Their antifouling activities were evaluated together with eight previously known compounds isolated from the same samples. In particular, omaezol and hachijojim...

Synthesis and Bioactivity of a Cyclopolypeptide from Caribbean Marine Sponge

Synthesis of a natural proline-rich cyclopolypeptide - rolloamide A [8] was carried out by coupling of tri- and tetrapeptide units Boc-Phe-Pro-Val-OMe and Boc-Pro-Leu-Pro-Ile-OMe after proper deprotection at carboxyl and amino terminals using carbodiimide chemistry in alkaline environment followed by cyclization of linear heptapeptide segment in the presence of base. The structure of synthesize...

Plasticity predicts evolution in a marine alga

Under global change, populations have four possible responses: 'migrate, acclimate, adapt or die' (Gienapp et al. 2008 Climate change and evolution: disentangling environmental and genetic response. Mol. Ecol. 17, 167-178. (doi:10.1111/j.1365-294X.2007.03413.x)). The challenge is to predict how much migration, acclimatization or adaptation populations are capable of. We have previously shown th...
